Below you will find a list of activities for you to do with your child in the event school is closed due to an emergency situation.
Day 1:
Reading: Have your child first independently read a book, and then have them read it to you. It can be a book you have at home, a library book, or a story out of their reading books. Once they have done this, have them tell you about the main character and summarize the book by telling you the events in order.
Grammar/Writing: Have your child use the book they just read and make a list of 20 nouns. Beside each noun they need to write person, place, thing, or animal.
Word Study/Spelling: Have your child sort their word study words for the week and tell you how they sorted them.
Math: Have your child practice their addition facts by orally calling them their facts. They can also make flashcards with their addition facts by using index cards or small sheets of paper.
Social Studies/Science: Have your child read over their notes for the current topic in their interactive Social Studies or Science notebook. It is always important to review map skills. So, have your child locate the 7 continents (North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Africa, Antarctic, and Australia) on a map of the world.
Day 2:
Reading: Have your child read another book independently, and then have them read it to you. It can be a book you have at home, a library book, or a story out of their reading books. Once they have done this, have them illustrate their favorite part of the book. Then they need to write at least 3 sentences describing their favorite part of the book.
Grammar/Writing: Review statements (telling sentences) and questions (asking sentences) with your child. Have them write 5 statements and 5 questions.
Word Study/Spelling: Have your child sort and write their word study words for the week.
Math: Have your child practice their subtraction facts by orally calling them their facts. They can also make flashcards with their subtraction facts by using index cards or small sheets of paper.
Social Studies/Science: Have your child read over their notes for the current topic in their interactive Social Studies or Science notebook. It is always important to review map skills. So, have your child locate the equator and 5 oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian, and Southern) on a map of the world.
Day 3:
Reading: Log onto www.starfall.com, go to the “I’m Reading” link, and choose a fiction book to read. Explore other activities on this website. If you do not have access to the internet, have your child repeat one of the reading activities from Day 1 or Day 2 with another book.
Grammar/Writing: Review commands (sentences that tell you to do something) and exclamations (sentences that use excitement or surprise) with your child. Have them write 5 commands and 5 exclamations.
Word Study/Spelling: Have your child “rainbow write” their words by writing each letter of a word in a different color. Take a spelling practice test.
Math: Write 20 addition and subtraction facts (mix them up) for your child to answer. Once they have done this you can log onto one of the following websites for math games: www.internet4classrooms.com (select 2nd grade), www.softschools.com (select Math Games), or www.fun4thebrain.com.
Social Studies/Science: Have your child read over their notes for the current topic in their interactive Social Studies or Science notebook. It is always important to review map skills. So, have your child locate the Appalachian & Rocky Mountains, the James, Mississippi, & Rio Grande Rivers, and the Great Lakes on a map of the United States.
