• In the event school should have to close for an emergency situation, the county is asking parents to continue instruction at home.  Below is a list of activities that we ask you to do with your child in the event that Nottoway will have to close.

     

    Day 1:

    Reading/Phonics:

    *Log onto www.starfall.com and have your child complete an activity that goes with the phonics skill of the week.  The skill can be found on the Newsletter page of this site.

    *Have your child read a book or story with you.  Discuss where the story takes place, the characters, and why the author wrote the book or story.

    Grammar:

    *Have your child write a complete sentence that is a statement.

    Word Study:

    *Have your child sort their spelling words and explain to you the way that they are sorted.

    Math:

    *Log onto www.softschools.com and click on the Math Worksheets link on the left hand site of the page.  Print out an addition and/or subtraction page for you child to complete.

    Social Studies:

    *Using a map of the world, have your child recall the 7 continents & 5 oceans

    Day 2:

    Reading/Phonics:

    *Go to the Newsletter section of my webiste and recall the phonics skill for the week.  Have your child think of as many words as they can that have that sound.  Have them write them down on a piece of paper.  

    *Read a story or book with your child, before reading have them make predictions on what they think the book will be about.

    Grammar:

    *Have your child write a complete sentence that is a question.

    Word Study:

    *Have your child sort & write their words.

    Math:

    *Log onto www.softschools.com and click on the Math games link on the left hand side of the site.  Have your child play the "Find Place Value of a Number" game.  Put in a maximum number of 999.

    *After playing the game, go to the worksheets page and download a Place Value worksheet (with a maximum number of 999 again) fofr your child to complete.

    Science:

    *Have your child tell you 3 ways they can use magnets around the house.

    Day3:

    Reading/Phonics:

    *Log onto http://www.earobics.com/gamegoo/gooey.html and have your child play the "Alien Scavenger Hunt Letter Bugs" game.

    *Log onto www.starfall.com, click on the "I'm Reading" link and choose a Fiction/Nonfiction story to read with your child.

    Grammar:

    *Have your child write a complete sentence that is a command.

    Word Study:

    *Have your child do a rainbow write of their words.  They take 3 different color crayons and write each word in one color, then write the word in the second color right on top of the first color, and the third color directly on top of the first 2 colors.

    Math:

    *Log onto www.softschools.com and click on the counting link on the left hand side of the page.  Scrolling down close to the bottom of the page, download a Count by 2,3,4,5, worksheet, and have your child play the Odd or Even game right below the worksheet link.

    Social Studies:

    *On the U.S. map, locate the Appalachain & Rocky Mountains, the James, Mississippi, & Rio Grade Rivers, and the Great Lakes

    Day 4:

    Reading/Phonics:

    *Log onto http://www.earobics.com/gamegoo/gooey.html and have your child play the "Alien Scavenger Hunt Space Trash" game.

    *Log onto www.starfall.com and choose another Fiction/Nonfiction book from the "I'm Reading" link.  Discuss the book with your child as you read.

    Grammar:

    *Have your child write a complete sentence that is an exclamation.

    Word Study:

    *Have your child do a Blind Sort with you.  Your child will put their star words down and give you the rest of the words.  Call each word to your child and ask them which group the word belongs in.  If your child tells you the correct group, have them place the word down, if they don't, have them try again until they get it correct.

    Math:

    *Log onto http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skills-2nd-mathbuilders.htm and click on the Money link and a list of activities will come up.  Click on Activity 4 "Change It".  You choose the number of problems, and the number of coins your child will add up.  We've been doing amounts less than $1 everyday during our calendar time, so I would use amounts that are less than $1.

    Science:

    *Have your child draw a picture of 2 bar magnets attracting and a picture of 2 bar magnets repelling.  Be sure they label the poles.

    Day 5:

    Reading/Phonics:

     * Log onto http://www.earobics.com/gamegoo/gooey.html and have your child play the Paw Park Alphabet Bears game to practice Alphabetical Order. 

    *Log onto www.starfall.com go to the "I'm Reading" link and have your child choose a Comic to read with you.  Have your child draw a picture of what they think will come next in the comic.

    Grammar:

    *Have your child write a list of nouns and sort them by people, places, things, and animals.  Try to have 5 in each group.

    Word Study:

    *Do a pretest with your child.  Have them write the headings for their groups down on a piece of paper.  As you call the words, they should put the word in the correct group and spell it correctly.

    Math:

    *Log onto http://www.teachingtime.co.uk/draggames/sthec1.html (times to the hour & half hour) or http://www.teachingtime.co.uk/draggames/sthec2.html (times to the quarter hour) and have your child play the game.  Have them play several times to try to beat their own times.

    Social Studies:

    *Have your child tell you the rules for the classroom and ways that they can make sure that they follow the rules.
